2024 Quilt Show Categories and Rules

All panel quilts will be in the panel category.

100 Small Pieced **Stationary Machine Quilting – More than 50% pieced, 225” or less in perimeter.

200 Large Pieced **Stationary Machine Quilting – More than 50% pieced, 226” or greater in perimeter.

300 Small Pieced *Longarm Quilting – More than 50% pieced, less than 250” in perimeter.

400 Medium Pieced *Longarm Quilting – More than 50% pieced, 251” – 325” in perimeter.

500 Large Pieced *Longarm Quilting – More than 50% pieced, 326” or more in perimeter.

600 Solo *Longarm Quilting – Pieced or Applique Any Size. This is for quilts completely made and quilted by the entrant/member using self-guided quilting (not computerized).

700 Pieced or Appliqued Hand Quilting – Hand Quilting, Any Size.

800 Applique **Stationary Machine Quilting – More than 50% Applique, Any Size (includes collage).

900 Applique *Longarm Quilting – More than 50% Applique, Any Size (includes collage).

1000 Other Techniques– any size, to Include Machine /Computer Aided Quilts (includes
Applique in the Hoop), where the machine has control of the actual stitching and not using traditional hand guided methods. This category also includes group, thread painting, crazy quilts, yo-yo quilts, cathedral window, folded fabric and fabric manipulation quilts.

1100 Art Quilts/Innovative – entrants own original design, Any Size, Any Style, utilizing the
principals of good design. This category does not include quilts made using traditional blocks in a traditional type setting where the quilter did not use a commercial pattern. Includes original design collage quilts.

1200 Miniature Quilts – Must be a small version of a full-size traditional quilt or wall hanging, including whole cloth and Applique. Maximum finished Block size 4”, e.g. for a nine-patch block, the finished size of the nine-patch must be 4” or less, 96” or less in perimeter.

1300 Wearable Art – must have at least 2 layers of fabric with some type of stitching or quilting holding it together. The item may contain an interior lining that is not quilted. May not include hats, handbags and totes.

1400 Panel and Wholecloth Quilts – Any Size.

1500 Modern – Any Size and Style, inspired by Modern Design. Can be reinterpreted traditional blocks; usually includes high contrast, bold colors and prints, improvisational piecing and expansive negative space. May contain alternate gridwork and asymmetry.

1600 Guild Challenge Entries

Special Exhibit – YOUTH QUILTS – Age 17 and under. Must be sponsored by a member of a guild. Only 1 entry per youth, 200” or less perimeter, any style.

*LONGARM QUILTING – quilting by machine where the fabric is held stationary by a frame and
the machine moves across the fabric and creates the quilting stitches

**STATIONARY MACHINE QUILTING – Quilting by machine where the machine remains in a fixed position and the fabric is moved while the machine is creating the quilting stitches.

RULES

• All panel quilts will be in the panel category.

• The Entrant must be a guild member in good standing and the maker of the quilt, excluding the quilting stitches.

• Quilts must be finished within the last 5 years.

• Quilts that have been quilted by someone other than the entrant are not eligible for any of the following awards:  Best Hand Quilting, Best Stationary Machine Quilting and Best Longarm Quilting. They are eligible for all other awards.

• One Entry per Category and a maximum of 3 quilts per member in the show. Challenge, Wearable Art and Miniature categories do not count in the total per member.

• A 4-inch sleeve must be attached to the back of all categories except 1200, 1300, 1600 (Miniature, Wearable Art and Challenge).

• The entrants name must be stitched to a lower corner of each quilt back and the inside of a wearable item.  Please cover your name (any place it appears on the front or back of a quilt or item by using a piece of Muslin pinned with safety pins. NO STRAIGHT PINS. A piece of masking tape may also be used.

• A Fabric bag, with your name and phone number on it is required for each entry. NO PLASTIC BAGS. All items in the Fabric bag must be identified with your name. A quilt may be rolled on a noodle, but the noodle must be in a bag.

• Please do not place cardboard in the bag to keep your quilt flat.

• Quilts that require special handling will not be accepted. Your quilt must be able to be stacked with other quilts without damage to it or to other entries. If you are concerned over attachments to your quilt, you may box it and then slip the box into a bag not larger than the approximate size of a pillowcase. (18 x36).

• We will not be responsible for damage caused by stacking the quilts for judging or storing them prior to the show.

• NO RIGID FRAMES, RODS or MOUNTING DEVICES may be sewn into the sleeves of quilts.

• ALL quilts must be clean and free of pet and/or smoke odor or other scents like Febreeze.

• If a Category has less than 5 entries, those entries may be moved to another category.

• We reserve the right to choose the entries for display if more entries are received than can be properly exhibited.

• A photo of the quilt (quilt does not have to be finished) or pattern is required with registration form.

• We reserve the right to change the category of a quilt if necessary.

• All quilts must have some form of stitching holding all layers of the quilt together (hand stitching, tying, machine stitch).

• The entrant for a group quilt must be a member of the guild. Other people in the group do not have to be guild members.

• Collaborative quilts, made by 2 or more guild members, will be awarded only one ribbon. The entry will count as one entry for each member of the collaboration. This does not include quilts made by one member and quilted by another member. It is a totally joint project. Collaborative quilts can be submitted to any category for which they meet the requirements.

Judged Entries: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place ribbons will be awarded, if merited, in each judged category. Honorable Mention ribbons will be awarded when merited. Best of Show will be selected from the 1st Place winners, additional ribbons will be awarded for:
Best Applique Quilt
Best Pieced Quilt
Best Hand Quilting
Best Stationary Machine Quilting,
Best Longarm Machine Quilting
Best Use of Color
Judges Recognition
There may also be some special ribbons awarded for “Made Me Smile”.

  • All judged entry ribbons will be placed on the quilts before the show opens on Friday, November 15th.
  • Guild Challenge entries will be judged by a separate committee for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Ribbons.
  • Judges Recognition Award may be awarded to any quilt in any category that the judge chooses.
  • Viewer’s Choice: One ribbon will be awarded in each category from all show entries. The Viewer’s Choice Awards will be awarded on Saturday afternoon, November 16th. There will be NO CASH Prizes for any quilts.
  • Youth Quilts are not eligible for awards but will receive a ribbon for recognition.
